Education for Sustainable Development

The World Summit in Rio 1992 launched Sustainable Development as a global project of humankind with the goal to save our living space by a balance of ecology, economy and social welfare. The so-called «Agenda 21» an action plan to implement this project underlines the importance of education for this plan. The UN-general assembly declared the years 2005 to 2014 as «World Decade for Education to Sustainable Development».

In 1997 the federal council of Switzerland came up with a strategy for Sustainable Development, followed by a decision o f the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK / CIP) to include Education for Sustainable Development into educational programms in 2003. Meanwhile a plan of measures has been worked out and is being implemented. ESD has become compulsary at vocational schools.

The Foundation Education and Development saw Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the line of actual educational concepts with whom the Foundation works – mainly Global Education: The specific approach of interdependencies between local action and global effects convenes with the analytical framework of ESD.
